Usher Volunteers

Thank you for your interest in being an usher at the Grover C. Maxwell Performing Arts Theatre. This is the perfect time to become part of a new tradition. In an effort to increase our level of service for our patrons, the Maxwell Theatre is looking for interested ASU students, High School students, and community volunteers to usher at Maxwell Theatre events.

Follow the links below for additional information:

Sign me up!
All you need to do to sign up for ushering is send an email to kthoma12@aug.edu or call 706-729-2310. If it is your first time to sign up, please include your name, mailing address, phone number, and email address in the body of the message. I will place you on our email/call list for ushering. Unless you ask to usher a specific show, you are not making any commitment by signing up for the list. You can remove your name by emailing or calling and asking to be removed.

If you want to sign up for a particular show, please include the name of the show, the date, and the time of the performance in your email. Kelly Thomas, the Maxwell Theatre Director, or our Student House Manager will email you back to confirm.

Who can usher?
If you are a freshman in High School or older you can usher! Although many of our ushers are ASU students, we have High School students and adults who are looking for a break from their work routine. Retired people also usher. If you have a group that would like to usher for a particular event or group of events, please call
706-729-2310. We would love to hear from you!

Do I need training?
We provide all of the training when you arrive for the performance. No previous experience is necessary.

When do I arrive for the performance?
We ask that ushers arrive one hour and fifteen minutes before the performance begins. The first fifteen minutes is a time to gather and socialize. We will begin our usher assignments and training one hour before the performance begins. It is very important to be on time. If ushers do not come on time, we cannot assign places and give instructions. Late ushers can even cause the performance to start late.

What do I wear?
All ushers should dress in black and white. A white shirt or blouse of some kind is required. Button down shirts are common, but other options are acceptable. Black pants, slacks, or skirt, are required. We prefer that you do not wear jeans, however, if black jeans are not faded or torn they can be worn if nothing else is available. Please wear dress shoes of some type. If tennis shoes are worn, they must be black and in good condition. Please do not wear flip-flops, and try to avoid other open toed shoes.
We are planning on provided some sort or vest or blazer at some point. Do you have ideas? Send me your thoughts at kthoma12@aug.edu.

What do I do?
We have several different jobs that you may be asked to do. The primary jobs are listed here, but at any given performance we may have a special need. You do not need to memorize the information below. You will receive complete instructions on the night of the performance.

Ticket Taker
Ticket takers will stand in the lobby in front of the entry way into the theatre and rip the stubs off of each ticket as the patrons go by. Ticket takers should check to see that the ticket is for the correct performance, and that student and children’s tickets are being used appropriately.

Seating Usher
Seating ushers are responsible for making sure that patrons are seated appropriately and in a timely fashion. Seating ushers should check the patron’s tickets for seating location and double check the performance time. They will bring patrons to the correct row and give each patron a program. For general admission performances they hand out programs and answer questions about available seating locations. During the performance the seating ushers will enforce our policies on cameras and recording devices, and food and drink. Ushers should also make sure that patrons are not disruptive to other patrons, and keep and eye out for emergency situations. They may also help door ushers with late seating.

Door Usher
Door ushers and seating ushers have the same duties except that door usher are also responsible for a door and for late seating. We will use up to six door ushers for any one performance.

The House Left Emergency Door
The usher responsible for this door will be a seating usher before the performance begins. During the performance, during intermission, and while patrons are exiting after the performance this usher will make sure that patrons do not use this door unless there is an emergency.

The House Right Door
The usher responsible for this door will be a seating usher before the performance begins. During the show this usher will make sure that patrons do not use this door. Before the show, during intermission, and after the show, patrons may exit this door, but they may not enter, unless they are unable to physically make it to the lobby door.

The Main Doors
The ushers responsible for these doors will be seating ushers before the performance begins. The main responsibility of these ushers is to handle late seating and make sure that these doors to not make noise during the performance. One usher should be between the double doors on each side of the theatre, and one usher should be just inside the theatre next to the door. Late seating rules for the performance will be given during usher training.

ASU ID Usher
ASU ID ushers will ask for the ID from each ASU student, faculty, or staff, and swipe them through our card reader. The card reader will verify that they are current and log them into the performance. The usher will stand next to the ticket taker or at the box office table.

Will Call Volunteer
At each performance some people will have purchased their tickets in advance. The will call volunteer will give the pre-ordered tickets to the appropriate patrons.

Merchandise
On occasion some performing groups request that we provide a seller for their merchandise. These sales are simple sales and detailed instructions will be given to any usher assigned to this position. Lobby ushers are often asked to sell merchandise.

Lobby Ushers
This is the only category with a separate sign up. Lobby ushers will remain in the lobby during the performance and handle lobby questions and late seating form the lobby side. We only need one usher doing this at any given time. Lobby ushers will often trade off with other ushers, so no usher has to miss too much of any one performance. If all four lobby slots are full for the performance, lobby ushers will only be required to miss one quarter of the performance. Lobby ushers will act as greeters in the lobby before the performance and during intermission. They will also assist patrons with special needs.
