Environmental Health & Safety

The Environmental Health & Safety Office (EHSO) provides service to both Augusta State University and the Physical Plant related to environmental and safety. The primary function of the EHSO is related to compliance with the rules, regulations and laws of the state of Georgia .

1. Environment: Environmental services include the proper disposal of hazardous waste and waste minimization (recycling) of materials that are generated campus departments as part of their normal operations to comply with the Resources Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) and the rules and regulations of Georgia 's Department of Natural Resources (DNR). Augusta State University (ASU) is a Small Quantity Generator (SQG) of hazardous waste. The EHSO also coordinates for the proper abatement and disposal of asbestos and Lead Based Paint (LBP) for the campus. The EHSO directly supervises the recycling of tires, batteries, fluorescent lamps and silver as part of the waste minimization to reduce ASU's environmental impact in Georgia 's landfills.

2. State Fire Code: As part of life safety, the EHSO reviews construction projects (both renovation and new construction) to ensure compliance with state fire codes of the state of Georgia and conducts periodic inspections and fire drills for campus buildings. The EHSO also participates in the development and review of ASU's Emergency Operations Plan (EOP). The EHSO coordinates for periodic safety training of Physical Plant employees for the operation of some heavy equipment (lifts and forklifts).

3. Right-To-Know: The EHSO is the Right-To-Know office for the campus and manages the Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) for Augusta State University .
