Master of Science in Psychology

The M.S. Program in Psychology offers three tracks: Clinical/Counseling, Applied Experimental, and General Experimental. The graduate program provides intensive education and training for careers at the master's level. The program can also provide preparation for further graduate education.

The M.S. Program in Psychology is designed as a full-time, day-time, and year-around program. Most students finish the degree in five semesters. Students complete coursework in core psychology areas such as learning, developmental, social psychology, and research methods, as well as specialized courses in assessment, therapy, and research skills.

Accreditation
Augusta State University is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. In addition, the Clinical/Counseling track of the master's program is accredited by the Masters in Psychology Accreditation Council (MPAC). It should be noted that the American Psychological Association (APA) does not accredit masters' programs. The Department and its faculty members maintain active relationships with the discipline's various governing and professional bodies, such as the American Psychological Association (APA), American Psychological Society (APS), Council of Graduate Departments of Psychology (COGDOP), Council of Applied Master's Programs in Psychology (CAMPP), and North American Association of Master's in Psychology (NAMP).

• Small Class Sizes – Many classes have student to faculty ratios of 14:1 or smaller.
• Relevant Coursework – Students in the clinical/counseling track complete hands-on training in psychological assessment, therapy interventions, and research skills. The applied experimental track provides intensive research internship experiences along with coursework in core areas of psychology. The general experimental track offers coursework in core areas of psychology, many research opportunities, and the option of completing a thesis.
• Internship Opportunities – Graduate students in psychology at ASU have a large variety of internship placements in the community, including clinical and research placements. Our program is one of the few in the country that has a teaching internship to offer teaching experience to those who would like teach at the college level.
• Assistantship Opportunities – The psychology department is pleased to be able to offer a limited number of assistantships to graduate students. These assistantships pay for students' tuition and offer stipends in exchange for 10 hours of work for the department.
• Thesis Option – Students who plan to apply for a Ph.D. program in psychology have the option of completing a thesis project under the guidance of a faculty member.
• Employment Opportunities - Our students have had good success in the job market. Many work as counselors or behavior specialists in the public sector. Others choose to work in college lecturer positions, research associate positions, and human resource positions.
• License Eligibility – Students who complete the clinical/counseling track and the clinical internships are eligible for the Licensed Professional Counselor license in Georgia. This license permits independent clinical/counseling practice after education and supervision requirements are met.
