Undergraduate Program in Psychology

The undergraduate curriculum of the Department of Psychology is designed to help meet the
university's general education (core) objectives, and to prepare interested students for obtaining a minor or major in psychology.

The following learning outcomes and competencies have been established for those students
seeking a bachelor's degree in psychology:

1. Students will have a fundamental command of the discipline's empirical content and major
theoretical perspectives.
2. Students will be able to distinguish empirical and scientific methods of inquiry from other sources of information.
3. Students will be able to design, conduct and analyze the results of psychological research.
4. Students will be able to effectively communicate psychological information in written and oral form.
5. Students will have practical knowledge regarding behavior and mental processes which can be used for self improvement.
6. Students will be able to demonstrate how psychological knowledge can be used to address health, interpersonal and social issues.
7. Students will have the foundation to assume a psychologically related career and/or continue with more advanced education in the discipline.

Requirements for the Degree Bachelor of Arts with a Major in Psychology

What follows is a very brief summary. Minimum grade requirements, course prerequisites, restrictions, and other details are provided in the university's catalog. Students are strongly encouraged to meet regularly with an academic advisor.

1. Complete the university's core curriculum for Areas A-E (42 semester hours)
2. Complete Area F for psychology (18 semester hours)
    a. PSYC 1101 (or PSYC 1103 or PSYC 1105)
    b. PSYC 2101
    c. PSYC 2150
    d. Three additional approved nonpsychology courses (see the catalog)
3. Complete the upper-division major courses (30 semester hours)
    a. PSYC 3121
    b. PSYC 3122
    c. PSYC 3190 (recommended)
    d. Any two of the following: PSYC 4115, 4125, 4165, 4173, 4180
    e. Five additional upper-level PSYC courses
4. Complete minor and elective courses (30 semester hours)

Requirements for the Minor in Psychology

To minor in psychology, a student must complete PSYC 1101 and 15 semester hours of upper-level courses. Students are encouraged to consult with a psychology advisor in selecting courses, as there are a number of combinations of courses that emphasize specific educational or vocational goals.
