Augusta philanthropist presented President’s Award

  James Hull
(L to R): James Hull, Mrs. Hull, and President Bloodworth

James M. Hull, owner of Hull Storey Retail Group, LLC, a shopping center acquisition, development, and management firm based in Augusta, was presented the university’s highest honor on May 8 at the annual President’s Club Reception, which was hosted at the home of Boone and George-Ann Knox. The President’s Award is given to individuals who display service, dedication, and leadership to the university.

The Augusta philanthropist, for whom the Hull College of Business is named, is a member of the ASU Foundation and an avid supporter of the university. His $2 million gift to the university in 2006 to benefit business education prompted faculty in the college to recommend it be named in Mr. Hull’s honor. This year he was instrumental in obtaining a $2 million gift from the Knox Foundation to support the accountancy program within the college. He also gave an additional million dollars to support scholarships in the accountancy program.

An Augusta entrepreneur, Mr. Hull has been involved in commercial real estate since 1973 as a fee appraiser, commercial property broker, property manager, developer, and owner. He served in the U.S. Air Force and Air Force Reserves before founding Hull Properties, Inc., in 1977. In 1993, he co-founded Hull/Storey Development, LLC, which is now known as the Hull Storey Retail Group to better reflect the depth and scope of its development, acquisitions, and operations.

With over 10.5 million square feet of leasable area, Hull Storey is one of the largest privately owned retail real estate companies of its kind in the Southeast. Its portfolio consists of more than 49 retail shopping centers in Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Florida, Alabama, Texas, and Tennessee.

Mr. Hull enthusiastically supports the Augusta community through both his philanthropy and his volunteer leadership in a number of nonprofit organizations. He has served on the boards of Historic Augusta, Inc., the Gertrude Herbert Institute of Art, Morris Museum of Art, Augusta First Tee, Augusta Preparatory Day School, Episcopal Day School, and the Community Foundation of the CSRA. He also is a long-time member of the United Way’s Alexis de Toqueville Society.

A native of Augusta, Mr. Hull is married to the former V. Karen Newton of Millen, Georgia, and they have four children.
