ASU Fall Film Series begins
Augusta, Ga. – Augusta State University continues to challenge students to appreciate other cultures through its Fall Film Series, which will highlight a diverse group of independent, foreign films each Monday night in October. The films will be shown at 7 p.m. in 170 University Hall at ASU.
Family Law is an Argentinean film which depicts the way fathers and sons learn to communicate where open expression between men is not encouraged. In order for Ariel, the main character, to become a good father he must first learn to become a good son. Argentinean filmmaker, Daniel Burman, and his cast have won awards for best director, best supporting actor and actress, best screenplay, and the audience award. The Spanish film with English subtitles will be featured tonight, Oct. 1, at 7 p.m. This film is not rated.
Air Guitar Nation, is not just a bedroom sport anymore. This documentary follows the triumphant path of an American air guitarist as he rises from the U.S. East Coast champ to the top rankings at the air guitar festival in Finland. An audience member in the film claims that “you don’t have to be a rock star to be a rock star.” Alexandra Lipsitz’s film has won the audience award and has been noticed in many other categories at film festivals. The tribute to air guitar gurus will be Monday, Oct. 8, at 7 p.m. This film is rated R.
Immediately following the showing of Air Guitar Nation, ASU will feature its own air guitar contest for viewers to show off their rock star moves.
My Country, My Country is a portrait of one ordinary man faced with extraordinary historical circumstances according to The New York Times. As the world experiences the United States occupation of Iraq and its mission to reach democracy in the Middle East, director Laura Poitras has documented a man caught in the challenge of being an Iraqi medical doctor, a father of six, and a Sunni political candidate who is equally passionate about establishing democracy. This film is an Academy Award Nominee, Independent Spirit Award Nominee, and Oscar Nominee and has won Best Long Documentary at the Flahertiana Film Festival in Russia. My Country, My Country will be viewed on Monday, Oct. 15, at 7 p.m. This film is not rated.
The final film in the series is My Best Friend. An antique gallery owner has an elegant apartment, a lover, and a semi-estranged daughter, but he lacks the one thing he needs most, a friend. While it takes a lifetime to learn the meaning of friendship, François has 10 days when he is challenged by his co-workers to prove he has a friend. He finds himself learning what friendship is and how to gain friends from a suave cab driver. This French film with English subtitles will be shown on Monday, Oct. 22, at 7 p.m. This film is rated PG-13.
