Professor to present geological research
Augusta, Ga. – Augusta State University Assistant Professor of Physics Christian Poppeliers will present research at the 119th annual meeting of the Geological Society of America which will be held at the Colorado Convention Center in Denver. About 6,300 geologists are expected to attend and will have the opportunity to hear Dr. Poppeliers’ Oct. 31 presentation about a geophysical survey he conducted in Big Bend National Park, Texas.
“A colleague and I are interested in active mountain-building processes,” says Dr. Poppeliers. “The mountains in Big Bend Park are the eastern-most part of the Rocky Mountains, and we’re trying to understand how these mountains formed, why they formed at that location, when they formed, and whether they are still forming.”
According to Dr. Poppeliers, his presentation will summarize the results of the geology field work performed last summer, mapping out the extent of an igneous intrusion to prepare for the larger survey. Augusta State students will assist in the next and larger portion of that research this coming summer.
