ASU’s Art Department shows 20/20 Vision
Augusta, Ga. - Augusta State’s Department of Art is partnering with the Fire House Gallery in Louisville to co-host an invitational exhibit titled 20/20 Vision, featuring university printmakers from across the nation.
“We partner with various community organizations, such as the Morris Museum or the Gertrude Herbert Institute of Art, and we’re really pleased to be working with the Fire House Gallery as well. It’s a new gallery, founded in 2005, a non-profit that is really committed to building community through the arts,” says Kristin Casaletto, ASU professor of art and curator of the exhibit.
The exhibition, which runs from Jan. 30-Mar. 2, will display artwork from 20 national printmakers, each representing a state in the South and Midwest, in addition to one ASU student’s artwork. “The 20/20 Vision show is one of our most ambitious projects yet, and it’s been great to tie in the national show with my studio art classes at ASU,” says Ms. Casaletto.
A printmaking symposium at ASU on Friday, Feb. 1, will highlight the exhibit, with a hands-on printmaking workshop conducted by Bill Fisher, associate professor of art at Georgia College and State University. That afternoon, Ms. Casaletto will moderate a panel discussion at 2 p.m. in 221 University Hall about contemporary printmaking with Mr. Fisher, ASU’s Morris Eminent Scholar in Art Tom Nakashima, and ASU’s New Space Gallery Director Jackson Cheatham. Concluding the day’s events will be a reception from 7-9 p.m. at the Fire House Gallery.
“My advanced print students will be participating fully in the printmaking symposium. They will be working with the teaching and student philosophies and other materials submitted by the exhibitors, getting a great sense of what is going on nationally at some top printmaking schools around the nation, and participating in Mr. Fisher’s workshop,” she says.
Ms. Casaletto’s class will also work with University of North Dakota’s faculty and students to put together a portfolio exchange project. The joint portfolio of original prints will go into the print study collections at both universities.
The various print techniques, including lithography, etching, woodcut, silk screen, and digital methods, are documented in a full-color catalogue, which features all the prints in the exhibition.
