ASU to host Tri-College Celebration
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s dream of racial harmony will be remembered at a Tri-College Ceremony on Friday, Jan. 18, at noon in the Maxwell Theatre. This year’s guest speaker will be U.S. Representative John Lewis, an advocate for human rights and civil liberties.
Rep. Lewis has been an active participant in the Civil Rights Movement, serving as a volunteer in 1961 in the Freedom Rides, 4:07 PM 1/2/2008challenging segregation at interstate bus terminals throughout the South. During these volatile times, he was named chairman of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee that was charged with organizing student activism. Recognized as one of the Big Six Leaders of the Civil Rights Movement, in 1963, he served as an organizer and keynote speaker at the historic March on Washington.
Mr. Lewis was elected to Congress in 1986 to serve as the U.S. Representative of Georgia’s Fifth Congressional District. Rep. Lewis received his bachelor’s degree in religion and philosophy from Fisk University and is a graduate of the American Baptist Theological Seminary. He has also received numerous awards and honorary degrees.
