ASU to hold forum on immigration and Georgia law

Augusta, Ga. - More than 60,000 people demonstrated in Dekalb County against the passing of immigration reform Senate Bill 529. According to the bill, it provides for the comprehensive regulation of persons in this state who are not lawfully present in the United States. Despite the massive demonstrations, Governor Sonny Purdue signed the Georgia Security and Immigration Compliance Act also known as SB 529 a week later.

Fighting 529: Immigration and Georgia Law will be the topic of discussion on Thursday, March 1, at 6 p.m. in the Washington Hall Towers at Augusta State University. During the forum, the documentary, Fighting 529, will be shown.

Following the film, a question and answer session on the current issues facing Georgia legislation and Latino immigration will be conducted by Jerry Gonzalez, executive director of the Georgia Association of Latino Elected Officials (GALEO) and Cameron Lippard, assistant professor of sociology in ASU’s Department of Sociology, Criminal Justice, and Social Work.

This free event is sponsored by ASU’s Department of Sociology, Criminal Justice, and Social Work and ASU’s Center for Immigration Studies. For more information, call ASU’s Department of Sociology, Criminal Justice, and Social Work at 706-737-1735.
