Board of Regents approves Bachelor of Science in Nursing program at ASU
Augusta, Ga. – By the year 2010, more than 11,000 new registered nurses (RN) will be needed to replace those who have retired or left the profession, according to the Georgia Department of Labor.
Augusta State University will now be able to assist in filling those positions with the establishment of its new Bachelor of Science in Nursing which was approved by the University System of Georgia Board of Regents during their board meeting on Tuesday.
“We are excited about the possibility of providing baccalaureate nursing education at ASU and very pleased that the USG Board of Regents has confidence that ASU can help meet this significant need in our community,” says Charlotte Price, chair of the Department of Nursing. “We still have significant hurdles to cross before the program is actually implemented. We must now obtain approval from the Georgia Board of Nursing to develop the program. We will present our proposal to the Georgia Board of Nursing in May.”
The BSN program, whose goal is to increase its number of graduates from 70 to 150 annually, will build upon the university’s existing associate of science in nursing program. The three-track baccalaureate degree will include two tracks designed to meet the educational needs of students with no prior professional nursing education and to serve as an accelerated path for licensed practical nurses who desire a bachelor’s degree in nursing. The third is a fast track for registered nurses who want to receive the BSN degree.
The curriculum—designed to prepare students to be expert providers of nursing care—will offer numerous learning opportunities to develop a continuum of knowledge.
Once the new BSN program is approved by the Georgia Board of Nursing, Dr. Price says that the nursing department will pursue accreditation for the new BSN program from the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission, which already accredits the associate degree program.
