Teachers to study aquatic habitats across Georgia

Augusta, Ga. – This summer, 14 area science teachers will gain invaluable first-hand knowledge about Georgia’s aquatic habitats through a program that will take them from the mountains to the sea. Augusta State University Associate Professor of Biology, Bruce Saul, is in his second year of heading up the “Mountains to Sea” program which is funded by an Improving Teacher Quality grant.

“We supply teachers with information that they may not have about the waters of Georgia,” says Dr. Saul.

The participating teachers will spend the first day, July 13, learning about the Savannah River and training for the Adopt a Stream program. They will then travel to the mountain streams of north Georgia and make several stops on their way to St. Catherines Island on Georgia’s southeastern coast, learning about water quality, aquatic organisms, and the importance of healthy streams along the way. The trip ends with a lab day at ASU on July 26.

Dr. Saul says it is important for the high school and middle school teachers to experience the environmental impact humans have on the state’s waters and to pass along a sense of responsibility to their students.
