History ConferenceTopics ranging from medieval treatment of the mentally ill to bewitchment in early modern medicine will be explored at the seventh annual meeting of the Southern Association for the History of Medicine and Science February 25-26 at ASU. The conference will be sponsored by ASU, its Center for the Study of Georgia History, and the Medical College of Georgia.
Dr. Michael Bliss, a distinguished historian and professor at the University of Toronto, will present the keynote address at noon on Friday. His presentation, From Osler to Insulin: The Coming of Age of Medical Miracles, will be at the Medical College of Georgia. All other programs are at ASU in Allgood Hall. The conference will begin at 8 a.m. Friday, February 25.
The program will feature presentations by international scholars on a wide variety of topics that include yellow fever, Georgia’s Magic Mountains, the impact of the Savannah River Site, and genetically engineered foods. ASU scholars Dr. Wendy Turner, professor of history, and Brandice Schofe, a graduate student, will also make presentations. Dr. Turner will discuss early treatment of the mentally ill and Ms. Schofe will discuss the health of ancient Celts.
