Visiting artist Patrick Dougherty poses with Brian Rust, professor of art, and President Bloodworth at an informal lecture he presented at the site of his sculpture. Mr. Dougherty, who travels the world building large scale installation art with sticks, was on campus through January 28 as part of the university’s Lyceum Series. His piece, located on the lawn between the Maxwell Performing Arts Theatre and University Hall, evolved with the help of ASU faculty and staff, art students, and community volunteers and is made with locally harvested tree saplings. Mr. Dougherty has named the piece, which will last about two years, An Inside View. At his lecture, he said the nature-based sculpture was adjusted once he arrived on campus in order to have it reflect the long sidewalk near it and to move it closer to the center of activity so people would feel free to walk through it. Rick Pukis, assistant professor of communications, is also making a documentary about the sculpture’s creation.
