ASU to host National Science Olympiad in 2009

Augusta State has been selected to host the National Science Olympiad in 2009. The program, which began in 1982, promotes student interest in science and seeks to improve the quality of K-12 science education throughout the nation. Teams compete at a regional competition first, with the top 20 percent advancing to the state event. The first, and in some cases, the second place teams advance to the national competition held in mid-May.

“Some think that since the event is in 2009, there is plenty of time to prepare, but there is so much to be done now in 2005,” Dr. William Wellnitz, regional tournament director and professor of biology, says. “The faculty, staff, and students that have been involved have done a phenomenal job so far. And this is a community effort, and to have nearly 4,000 people come into the Augusta community is an honor in many different ways.”

The 2005 Regional Science Olympiad will be held at ASU on Saturday, March 5, beginning with an 8 a.m. registration.
