Augusta State to host Peach Belt Tournament
Augusta State will host the Peach Belt Tournament March 1-6 at the Christenberry Fieldhouse on Wrightsboro Road. The tournament includes competitions in men’s and women’s basketball, cheerleading, pep band, and dance. Twelve institutions will participate including ASU, Armstrong Atlantic State University, Clayton College and State University, Columbus State University, Francis Marion University, Georgia College and State University, Kennesaw State University, Lander University, University of North Carolina-Pembroke, University of North Florida, USC-Aiken, and USC Upstate.The conference is divided into two divisions, north and south, with six teams each. The top two seeds from each division receive a bye in the first round. ASU men will play at 8 p.m. Wednesday, March 2, and the women, at 8 p.m. on Thursday, March 3.
Peach Belt Conference Commissioner Marvin Vanover announced that the championship games will be televised live by Comcast Sports South. The broadcast will begin with the women’s tournament championship game from the Christenberry Fieldhouse on Sunday, March 6, at 2 p.m. The men’s final will follow at 4:30 p.m. The 2005 broadcast marks the third straight year that CSS has carried the PBC Championship, having aired the games on tape-delay in 2003 and going live for the first time in 2004.
“We’re very happy with the relationship we’ve established with CSS and are extremely happy to be on the air once again," said Commissioner Vanover. "We are hopeful that having these games broadcast live becomes a standard for the Peach Belt Conference and a tradition for the student-athletes who play in the tournament. We’re also hopeful this will open doors and expose other opportunities further down the road.”
The dance team, cheerleading, and pep band competitions take place on Saturday, March 5, from 11 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Sunday’s championship games begin at 2 p.m. with women’s play; the men’s game begins at 4:30 p.m. The telecast will close out a full week of activities at the Peach Belt Tournament. All tournament games will be broadcast live over the internet with full audio and video. Fans can see the internet broadcasts through ASU’s website (www.aug.edu) or the PBC’s at www.peachbelt.com.
The Peach Belt Conference is one of the premiere conferences in NCAA Division II with 12 schools in four Southeast states. The conference was founded in 1991 and the 2005 tournament will be the 14th edition.
