Staff Profile
To say that Marcia Faglier believes in the old adage that “a rose by any other name would smell just as sweet” would be an understatement. Ms. Faglier, who works in the personnel office, counts growing and arranging roses among her favorite things in life.
“Flowers are my other love, besides my grandchildren,” she says. “Roses are my favorite. That’s the queen flower.”
Her passion for roses began when a former coworker brought a miniature rose to work. She remembers thinking how beautiful the flower was. She began her own garden shortly after that when her brother, a member of the Augusta Rose Society, offered her part of his collection.
“He was moving and said that I could have half of them if I’d help him dig them up,” she says.
Those small beginnings have since bloomed into more than 300 roses in her own garden. She has also served as the president of the Augusta Rose Society for two years, and is an arrangement and horticulture judge for the American Rose Society. Her own arrangements—which she says are a labor of love—can often be seen at campus functions.
“These bigger arrangements, with three dozen or more roses, can take up to three or four hours to arrange,” she says.
Ms. Faglier also recently began a new position in the personnel office, where she was a senior secretary for four years. She’s now a personnel assistant II, working with graduate and student assistants as well as part-time faculty and staff.
“It’s a challenge that I’m having a great time learning,” she says. “I think working here at the university is so exciting—the history, the people, everything.”Who: Marcia Faglier
