Groundbreaking for the new Student Activities Center

Over 200 people turned out on February 15 under gray skies to watch students break ground for the new Student Activities Center.

Student Government Association President Lauren Ellison and Jaguar Activity Board chair and former Ms. ASU Latonia Gilbert led the groundbreaking. They were also flanked by long-time former director of student activities John Groves, and other present and past student leaders.

The earliest class leader taking part in the ceremony was Dr. Russell M. Blanchard, class of '28. Others took turns at the shovel following the initial groundbreaking.

Taking part in the program were President William A. Bloodworth, Jr., Board of Regents member J. Timothy Shelnut, ASU Foundation Chair Elaine Clark Smith, and Dean of Students Joyce A. Jones.

The event was held outside Reese Library, the site of the new building, which will adjoin the library by a two-story atrium. Construction will begin immediately by R.K. Allen & Associates on the 50,000 square-foot building that was designed by 2KM Architects, with considerable input from students in the design process. The new building will include a fitness center, student study and play areas, food court, a ballroom, and offices and meeting rooms for student activities, organizations, and publications, as well as the Student Government Association. Construction is expected to be completed in early 2006 on the privatized project made possible by student fees and the ASU Foundation.
