Why the Jaguars?

jaguarThe nickname "Jaguars" was taken from the initials of the school when it became a junior college in 1925. As the Junior College of Augusta, the letters JAG were the idea behind the school's nickname the "Jaguars." The first team to carry the school name was ironically a football team, which was the first and last time a football program existed at the Augusta school. The team posted a 3-3 record with wins over Erskine, Belmont Abbey and Young Harris College and lost to Carlisle, The Citadel and Blue Ridge. After one year the team was dropped because it dragged down the relatively inexpensive and longer established basketball program.
