On
January 2, 2002, Georgia Governor Roy Barnes appointed Augusta State
University alumnus (63) James G. Blanchard, Jr., Judge of Superior
Court for the Augusta Judicial Circuit, which serves Richmond, Columbia
and Burke Counties.
Since attending Augusta State University, Judge Blanchard attended and
graduated from Georgia Southern University (65) and Cumberland
Law School (68). Immediately prior to being appointed to the bench,
Judge Blanchard served as attorney for the city of Grovetown for more
than 24 years, as attorney for the Columbia County Board of Education
for 11 years, and as Associate Judge of the Columbia County Juvenile
Court for 21 years.
Judge Blanchard served as Chairman of the Columbia County Commission
from 1973 until 1976, having won a specially called election to fulfill
a vacancy created by the untimely death of his father. He has served
in numerous capacities for the Georgia Association of Criminal Defense
Lawyers, including time on the Executive Board and as its President
in 1989. In the 1990s, he received the highest compliment of his colleagues
in the Augusta Bar when they voted him among the top 10 lawyers they
would retain to represent them if accused of a criminal offense. Judge
Blanchard presently serves on the Board of Directors of Georgia Bank
and Trust Company and previously served on the Board of Directors of
Citizens Bank & Trust Company and Georgia State Bank.
Prior to being appointed to the bench, Judge Blanchard was a partner
in the law firm of Fleming, Blanchard, Jackson, Ingram & Floyd,
P.C. He is married to the former Rebecca Vernon and they have three
children and four grandchildren.
