The year was 1977. George A. Christenberry was president. Reese Library opened on Jan. 7. The U.S. Army Reserve Training Center property on Walton Way – the last part of the original Augusta Arsenal, was acquired. The college applied to the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare for surplus property known as the Armed Forces Golf Course. And it was the year Dave Owens began working at Augusta State – back then, Augusta College.

“I was a custodial worker, and I started off working in Markert Hall,” says Mr. Owens. “Then, I began working in the Fine Arts building and eventually ended up in Reese Library, where I worked for 20-something years.”

Mr. Owens retired from ASU in October 2003 because he wanted to stay at home with his wife. He will be recognized for his 26 years of service to the university at the Employee Recognition Ceremony Tuesday, May 4.

“I really feel very proud of my job and that I was a part of a good team in the physical plant and the people I worked with,” Mr. Owens says. “There’s been a lot of change since 1977 at Augusta State. Everything’s gotten better.”
