ASU Honors Outstanding Faculty

Highlighting Augusta State University's annual Honors Convocation at the Christenberry Fieldhouse March 19 was the presentation of awards to three faculty members. Janice Williams Whiting was awarded the Outstanding Faculty Member Award; Mark Fissel, the Louis K. Bell Research Award; and M. Edward Pettit, the Richard S. Wallace Distinguished Service Award.

Janice Whiting, professor of art, received the Outstanding Faculty Member award for outstanding teaching and service to the university and to the community. A faculty member since 1981, Ms. Whiting has served on numerous university committees, with current service on the Faculty Policies committee and the Honors program. She also directs ASU’s Italian Studies Abroad program. She has exhibited in major galleries throughout the nation and her painting,
Icon Series: Graces Under Fire, was selected for a national tour and inclusion in a book commemorating the tour, Elvis + Marilyn: 2xImmortal. Ms. Williams has a bachelor’s degree from the University of Georgia and a master of fine arts degree from Indiana State University.

Mark Fissel, professor of history, was named recipient of the Louis K. Bell Research Award recognizing his contributions in research and scholarly publications. Dr. Fissel has lectured and written extensively for professional historical journals on the subjects of warfare within the British Isles, the military revolution, Sir Thomas Bendysh, and Anglo-Ottoman relations. He contributed to three anthologies and has written two books:
English Warfare, 1511- 1642 and The Bishops' Wars: Charles I’s Campaigns Against Scotland 1638-1640. He came to ASU in 1998, after serving at the University of Oxford and Ball State University. He is a fellow of the Royal Historical Society and was a Fulbright Senior Lecturer at Bogazici University in Istanbul, Turkey. Dr. Fissel received master and doctoral degrees from the University of California, Berkeley.

M. Edward Pettit, associate dean of the Pamplin College of Arts and Sciences, received the Richard S. Wallace Distinguished Service Award, which recognizes exceptional service to the university, the students, and the community. Dr. Pettit, former chair of the Department of Math and Computer Science, served as acting assistant dean of the Pamplin College of Arts and Sciences, before being named associate dean in 1997.He has been directly involved in the university’s master planning efforts and coordinated the move of classes and offices into Allgood Hall. He currently is involved in planning for the university’s next move into University Hall later this year. Dr. Pettit is recipient of the alumni association’s 2004 Distinguished Service Award, and is a previous winner of the university’s Outstanding Faculty Member award. He joined the university in 1977 after serving at Benedict College and Western Michigan University. He earned master and doctoral degrees from the University of California, Riverside.
