Program focusing on mental health will kick off Cullum Lecture Series in April
The National Mental Health Association states that for mental health consumers, access to mental health services and the level of care are greatly affected by the degree to which the delivery system is "culturally competent." A culturally competent mental health system incorporates skills, attitudes, and policies to ensure that it is effectively addressing the treatment and psychosocial needs of individuals with diverse values, beliefs, and sexual orientations.
How the mental health system and delivery has changed and evolved will be discussed by Alex Mabe, professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Health Behavior at the Medical College of Georgia. He will present The Changing Environment of Mental Health Delivery as part of the Cullum Lecture Series at Augusta State University on Tuesday, April 11, at 11:30 a.m. That evening, a panel discussion titled Who Are the Stakeholders? Mental Health Advocates, Clinicians, and Consumers will be held at 7 p.m.
A second program on medical technology and nanotechnology will be presented by Jin-Xiong She, eminent scholar in Biotechnology and Genomic Medicine, Georgia Research Alliance and MCG. The lecture, The Impact of Biotechnology on Future Health Care, will be given at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, April 18. Robert Best, professor in the Nano Center and Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology in the University of South Carolina’s School of Medicine, will present Nanomedicine and the Development of New Medical Technologies that evening at 7 p.m.
The last program of the month will feature a presentation on disease prevention and control by Bernard Gutin, professor emeritus of pediatrics and physiology in MCG’s Georgia Prevention Institute. He will present Physical Activity, Body Composition and Health at 11:30 a.m. and The Unfit-Kid Syndrome at 7 p.m.
All programs will be held in 170 University Hall. For more information, contact Rebecca Rogers at 706-737-1694 or McKinley Thomas at 706-737-1468, co-chairs of the Cullum Committee.
