Employee of 17 years receives the staff Excellence Award

Gina Thurman, formerly the coordinator for special student programs and newly appointed assistant dean of students, received the Staff Excellence Award for spring 2006.
“I was very excited to receive the award,” says Ms. Thurman. “I was totally surprised. I had no idea.”
Ms. Thurman has worked at the university for 17 years and was the coordinator for special student programs for six years before recently being named assistant dean of students. In her role as coordinator for special student programs, she planned and organized the International Student Orientation each semester, served as the primary designated school official for Student and Exchange Visitor Information System, and was responsible for the maintenance of international student records. Ms. Thurman will continue to manage the international student programs and will work with housing and student activities on orientation and other programs.
A member of the Georgia College Personnel Association, she is also a member of the Georgia Association of International Educators, the Georgia Network Training Institute, and the NAFSA: Association of International Educators.
Ms. Thurman serves on a number of university committees including the Athletic Compliance Team, the Staff Advisory Council, and the Take Back the Night Planning Committee. She also serves on the Athletic Association Board of Directors and the Alumni Association Board of Directors and is the faculty advisor for the International Student Club and the Muslim Student Association.
A graduate of Augusta State, she earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration and a master’s degree in counselor education. She has a husband named Robert, who is also an alumnus of ASU, and two children, Ashley and Zachary.
