ASU Alumni Association presents awards

The Augusta State University Alumni Association annual awards presentation was held Feb. 21, at the Augusta Country Club.

The awards go to alumni and community members who have provided outstanding support to the community and ASU.

Lillie B. Johnson, chair of the Languages, Literature and Communications Department and a 1971 graduate, received the Distinguished Alumna Award for her outstanding leadership and academic integrity.

Richard D. Harrison, chair of the Department of Kinesiology and Health Science, received the Town and Gown Award. Harrison is known for being very active in the community and going "above the call of duty" for his students.

Also receiving awards were:
Bill E. Bompart, Distinguished Service Award. Bompart served Augusta College and ASU for more than 30 years, led the mathematics program to national recognition for excellence in curriculum and instruction, then went on to lead as a university vice president before retiring in 2002.

Charles J. Anderson, class of 1973, received the Golden Key Award. Anderson has been a trustee for the ASU Foundation since 1998, is a long-time member of the Augusta Exchange Club, and gives months of his time each year to organize the annual ASU Southeastern Lauderdale Golf Tournament.

Jennifer Whitford-Stoddard, classes of 1993 and 2001, received the Young Alumna Award. Whitford-Stoddard was voted outstanding graduate student when finishing her master’s degree in 2001. She went to work for the Medical College of Georgia as program coordinator for a federally-funded grant that brought Family Solutions Program, a program that targets first-time juvenile offenders and their families, to Richmond County.

The association also presented the slate of the 2003-’04 board of directors and new officers at the ceremony.
