Mark Barkley

Mark Barkley grew up in Aiken County. After graduating from Saint Angela Academy, Barkley was selected to receive a Faculty Scholarship by Augusta College. He enrolled in 1976 as a biology major. In 1978, he changed the major to computer science. Barkley received a Bachelor of Science as member of the first-class of computer scientists in 1982.

In the early years of clinical laboratory automation, he became the data coordinator at St Joseph's Hospital performing computer operations and programming. In 1985, he re-entered Augusta College.

In 1986, Barkley moved to the Savannah River Site in electrical and instrumentation. In 1987, after completing his MBA at Augusta College, Barkley was promoted to an engineering position in the Technical and Process Computing Department. He remained in this role for several years. In 1993, he graduated from the Leadership Augusta Program.

In 1994, Barkley became captivated with the Internet. In 1995, he launched the local Internet service provider Znet, which grew quickly and was subsequently acquired by Morris Communications Corporation. During his tenure at Znet and Morris, Barkley managed Internet projects and designed the database for the award-winning augustagolf.com. During this time, Barkley became known as Internet pioneer within the Augusta computing community.

In 1997, Barkley was able unite his interest in medicine, computers, and the Internet by becoming the first Chief Information Officer of Best Doctors, Inc. Best Doctors is an international medical referral and consulting company with domestic offices in Aiken and Boston, as well as international offices in South America and Europe. Barkley supervises all aspects of technical and business computing at Best Doctors. The corporate website (www.bestdoctors.com) has been selected as a Top Ten general medical website. He is married to the former Kathy Medlin and they have three adult daughters, including a current student at Augusta State University.
