It’s that time of year again when giving a little pays off big.

A Day for Augusta State University will kick off with the Fall Convocation, beginning at 8:15 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 12, in the Grover C. Maxwell Performing Arts Theatre. At 3 p.m., I Gave to A Day the First Day, an event for the faculty and staff who make their pledge or donation on the first day, will begin. The annual program focuses on fund-raising and friend-raising for ASU.

“You can make a restricted and/or an unrestricted donation,” said Ginger Chew, director of annual giving. “And the unrestricted is used for where the need is the greatest.”

Ms. Chew said that although some of the donations are restricted, the foundation encourages faculty and staff to make unrestricted donations. Unrestricted donations fund faculty-development programs, the Cullum Lecture Series, equipment, technology and construction projects, employee events, scholarships and more.

There are two parts to the A Day campaign – a campus campaign and a community campaign. Mike Searles is the campus chairman and David S. Copenhaver is the chairman of the community campaign.

The purpose is to increase the support the University receives from the corporate community and alumni and friends, and to strengthen the relationship between the university and the community. Essentially, any and all money raised supports the many programs the university doesn’t get state funding for.

According to Ms. Chew, faculty and staff donated over $120,000 last year. She said that’s a big jump from the first year in 1994, when faculty and staff contributed $32,000.

“We’ve come a long way,” she said. “This year, our goal for the community campaign is $380,000, and our goal for the on-campus campaign is $105,000.”
