The days of stretching slides of art images between fine arts faculty members are over. Since July, ASU has been a subscriber to ARTSTOR, an online cataloged database of art images. The database is available to all GALILEO users, whether they're on or off campus. "The basic idea is to make art images available to the people who want to teach art," says Priscilla Hollingsworth, professor of art. "These are high resolution, high quality images, and, even better, they're cataloged." While internet images have been available in past years, they were generally low resolution and poorer quality. Faculty members also had to find the images, rename the files, save them to a computer, and publish them for their students' use–a time consuming process. With the new database, there is now access to an organized database of 300,000 images. Users can also assemble image collections to refer back to each time they visit the database–all at no cost to them. Augusta State University is one of the first schools in Georgia to sign up for the program. While it's only in its first year of use, ARTSTOR was thoroughly tested at 30 respected universities across the country last year, Ms. Hollingsworth says. The initiation and maintenance of the database are funded by the Getty Institute and the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, which both support the arts through grants that help higher education.
