Faculty members assume administrative roles

New appointments in academic affairs will draw on the strength of experience and leadership as several faculty members assume new administrative roles. In the Katherine Reese Pamplin College of Arts and Sciences, Ms. Cynthia Craig has been appointed chair of the Department of Learning Support. She served as acting chair for the previous two years. Mr. Keith Luoma will become associate chair of the department. Both administrators are assistant professors of mathematics in learning support. Dr. Sam Robinson, associate professor of mathematics, has been appointed chair in the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, also after having served as acting chair for two years.

Dr. Kimberly Davies, associate professor of sociology, will become acting chair in the Department of Sociology while its chair, Dr. Allen Scarboro, is spending a year teaching in Egypt. Following the retirement of Lt. Col. David Freeman, the Department of Military Science will be headed by Lt. Col. Michele Goddette.

In the College of Education, Dr. Lynn Cadle, assistant professor of special education, has been appointed acting chair in the Department of Clinical and Professional Studies. Dr. Michael O’Connor, associate professor of health and physical education, will continue as acting chair in the Department of Kinesiology and Health Science, and Dr. Gordon Eisenman, associate professor of early childhood education, has been appointed acting chair in the Department of Teacher Development.

“Department chairs play a vital role in the success of students who choose to attend Augusta State University. In the position, they are responsible mainly for working with faculty members and others to maintain the type of environment within which all students can achieve their academic goals. I believe we have identified new and acting department chairs who will help us continue in this tradition at ASU. I look forward to working with them,” says Dr. Samuel Sullivan, vice president for academic affairs.

Two schools also have new deans. As announced previously by Dr. Sullivan, Dr. Robert Parham will lead the Pamplin College of Arts and Sciences and Dr. Thomas Deering, the College of Education.

Dr. Edward Pettit, a professor of mathematics and computer science, will continue in the role of associate dean of the Pamplin College, and Dr. Richard Harrison, former chair of the Department of Kinesiology and Health Science, who served as acting dean of the College of Education last year, will serve this year as acting associate dean.
