Campus Notables

Marsha Loda, languages, literature, and communications, participated in the Travel and Tourism Research Association annual conference June 20-23 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. She presented a paper at the conference titled The Persuasive Effect of Integrating Advertising and Publicity on a Tourism Destination.

Priscilla Hollingsworth, fine arts, participated in a month-long program on Japanese culture at the Japan Studies Institute at San Diego State University. The program was sponsored by the American Association of State Colleges and Universities, of which ASU is a member. While at the program, Ms. Hollingsworth studied Japanese language, attended lectures on history and culture, and performed curriculum research. She also taught a hands-on, day-long workshop on making double-walled ceramic fans at the Cheryl Tall Studios in Escondido. Ms. Hollingsworth also will have works displayed in an exhibition sponsored by the Georgia Clay Council at the Cherokee County Arts Center in Canton, Ga. The exhibition will run August 27 - September 22.

Ted Atkinson, languages, literature, and communications, presented a paper titled Faulkner's Burning Barns: The Cultural Politics of Rural Dissidence in the Great Depression at the 2004 Faulkner and Yoknapatawpha Conference held at the University of Mississippi in Oxford on July 25-29.

Carol Rychly, math and computer science, has obtained her doctoral degree in secondary education from the University of South Carolina. Dr. Rychly, an assistant professor of mathematics, joined the faculty in 1989. She obtained her bachelor's degree from Agnes Scott College and a master's degree from Louisiana State University.

Jurgen Brauer, business administration, presented a keynote paper titled United States Military Expenditures in Larissa, Greece, and another paper titled Arms Trade Offsets: What do we know? in Bristol, United Kingdom.

William Nelson, library, presented a workshop on using ACRL library standards to address SACS standards at Oglethorpe University on July 22. He was invited to write and submit an article to the professional encyclopedia in the library field, the Encyclopedia of Library and Information Science, which is available online and is kept current by quarterly updates. Dr. Nelson's article appears in the latest update: “Library Standards in Higher Education: An Overview.” Encyclopedia of Library and Information Science. Online published July 21, 2004. 11 pages; 8500 words.

Dr. William A. Bloodworth, Jr., president, will be presenting the keynote address August 5 at the national conference of the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi in Albuequerqe, New Mexico. A news release about his presentation can be found at the organization's website, www.phikappaphi.org.

News Briefs

Faculty and staff are invited to a reception on Tuesday, August 10, to meet the new deans of the Katherine Reese Pamplin College of Arts and Sciences and the College of Education. The 4 p.m. reception in University Hall will honor Dr. Robert Parham, arts and sciences, and Dr. Thomas Deering, education.

An exhibition of works by faculty artist Brian Rust will be on display August 6 - September 18 at the Mary Pauline Gallery, located on Broad Street in Augusta. The exhibition features recent collage drawings and sculptures by the artist. An opening reception will be held at the gallery on Thursday August 5, 5-8 p.m., and the public is invited.

Faculty in the Department of Fine Arts participated in a digital workshop on campus July 19-23, taught by Simone Patterson, an artist and digital expert from Australia. Each faculty member also worked on independent projects that focused on curricular and/or art-making issues.

ASU’s Staff Advisory Council and Alumni Association will host ASU Night with the Augusta Green Jackets on Thursday, August 26, beginning with a picnic at 6:30 p.m. at Lake Olmstead Stadium. Tickets for the picnic and game are $12 per person, and for the game only, $6. The "all you can eat" picnic features hotdogs, hamburgers, potato salad, slaw, chips, and soft drinks. Faculty, staff, students, alumni, and friends are invited to attend. The game between the GreenJackets and the Rome Braves begins at 7:15 p.m.
