Allen named general manager at Forest Hills Golf Club

Scott AllenMr. Scott Allen has been named general manager and head professional at Forest Hills Golf Club. He had been serving in an interim capacity since April 11, when former general manager and head professional Robbie Watson resigned to become general manager of Columbia County’s new Bartram’s Trail Golf Club.

“Scott brings to the job 13 years of experience at the course and the high respect of its members, players and staff,” says Don Grantham, chair of the Forest Hills Management Committee. “He’s an excellent choice. As acting manager, he has the proven ability to lead Forest Hills in all the right directions. He will strengthen our traditions of high-quality golf, public accessibility, member satisfaction, and support of Augusta State University. I think that everyone who plays golf at Forest Hills, and everyone who will play here in the future, will applaud our promotion of Scott.”

Interestingly enough, golf was not Mr. Allen’s first choice, although he comes from a family of accomplished golfers. His brother, Rob Allen, served as golf pro at the Augusta Country Club. His grandmother, Mary Rogers Brantley, was named Florida State Amateur five times and was the winner of the 1935 Women’s Southern Amateur Open. He played golf, growing up in Blackshear, Ga., and was friends with former Forest Hills manager Robbie Watson when they both played junior golf in Waycross.

But Mr. Allen had to make a choice between two sports when he entered college at Valdosta State University, and he chose baseball. He played on the college team and after graduation, was drafted by the Cleveland Indians. For a few years he played on minor league teams around the country before being released to find a new career. He settled in Augusta where his brother, Bob, and old friend Robbie Watson were—and also, in part, because some family members lived nearby in Aiken. He was hired as an assistant at Forest Hills, and in 1997 he obtained his PGA Class A membership.

His immediate plans for Forest Hills are to get the staffing fully restored, and to complete the paths, some of which were redirected when the course underwent restoration in 2003 to more closely resemble its original Donald Ross design.

Forest Hills Golf Club is an Augusta State University facility that is operated by the university’s athletic association through a management contract with the Augusta Golf Association.
