Interestingly enough, golf was not Mr. Allen’s first choice, although he comes from a family of accomplished golfers. His brother, Rob Allen, served as golf pro at the Augusta Country Club. His grandmother, Mary Rogers Brantley, was named Florida State Amateur five times and was the winner of the 1935 Women’s Southern Amateur Open. He played golf, growing up in Blackshear, Ga., and was friends with former Forest Hills manager Robbie Watson when they both played junior golf in Waycross. But Mr. Allen had to make a choice between two sports when he entered college at Valdosta State University, and he chose baseball. He played on the college team and after graduation, was drafted by the Cleveland Indians. For a few years he played on minor league teams around the country before being released to find a new career. He settled in Augusta where his brother, Bob, and old friend Robbie Watson were—and also, in part, because some family members lived nearby in Aiken. He was hired as an assistant at Forest Hills, and in 1997 he obtained his PGA Class A membership. His immediate plans for Forest Hills are to get the staffing fully restored, and to complete the paths, some of which were redirected when the course underwent restoration in 2003 to more closely resemble its original Donald Ross design. Forest Hills Golf Club is an Augusta State University facility that is operated by the university’s athletic association through a management contract with the Augusta Golf Association.
