Chancellor Thomas Meredith resigns

The Board of Regents is expected to take action at their August meeting to name an interim chancellor to replace Chancellor Thomas Meredith who has resigned to accept a position as commissioner of the Mississippi Institutions of Higher Learning, the governing board for the state’s eight public universities. The announcement of a possible interim being named was made by Regent J. Timothy Shelnut, chair, following a telephone conference of the regents.

According to Regent Shelnut, the Atlanta-based executive search firm Baker-Parker & Associates will assist the system with the national search for a new chancellor. Dr. Stephen Portch, a former USG chancellor, will also work with the board as an advisor.

A new chancellor is expected to be appointed by January. Dr. Meredith has served as chancellor of the University System since January 2002.
