College of Education departments change names

University HallTwo departments in the College of Education have new names. The Department of Teacher Development will now be known as the Department of Teacher Education and the Department of Clinical and Professional Studies will now be called the Department of Educational Leadership, Counseling, and Special Education. The official name changes were approved by the Board of Regents at their July meeting.

“Our request to change the names of both of these departments reflects much more accurate and more clear views of their purpose,” says Dr. Samuel Sullivan, vice president for academic affairs. “We are proud of the programs housed within these departments, and we firmly believe that these name changes effect a positive, clear message of each unit’s mission.”

The Department of Educational Leadership, Counseling, and Special Education offers undergraduate programs as well as three master’s degree programs, an education specialist degree program in educational leadership, and a cooperative doctoral program with Georgia Southern University, also in educational leadership. The department also operates the three ASU Literacy Centers and the Counselor Education Training Center. The CETC offers free counseling by graduate students to members of the community, under the supervision of ASU faculty.

The Department of Teacher Education operates undergraduate and graduate programs in early childhood, middle grades, and secondary education. The department also partners with 36 area professional development schools, where ASU students gain real classroom experience.

"The faculty in the college were working on several program revisions much of last year. As they did so, they realized that their department names were not as descriptive as they could be,” adds Dr. Thomas E. Deering, dean of the College of Education. “We believe these descriptive changes will be appreciated by our students and faculty."

More than 700 majors are housed in the two departments.
