Dr. James W. Garvey, professor of English, has been appointed as interim director of the ASU Honors Program. In his capacity as interim director, Dr. Garvey will advise the program’s students on course selections, thesis topics, and more. He also will continue his roles as faculty advisor to The Bell Ringer and as campus chair of the annual A Day for Augusta State University fundraising campaign. "Dr. Garvey has a long and distinguished record of service to ASU, and I am sure that he will bring to this position the same level of dedication that he brings to all his endeavors on behalf of ASU," says Dr. William Dodd, ASU’s associate vice president for academic affairs. The Honors Program is specifically designed to give students who are talented and motivated a chance at a unique learning experience. Students are enrolled in honors sections of core classes and have the opportunity to take interdisciplinary seminar courses, often team taught by several faculty members and covering a theme rather than a specific subject. Dr. Garvey has been a faculty member at ASU since 1979. He has served on a variety of campus committees including the SACS Accreditation Steering Committee, College Council, Student Activities Committee, and the Faculty Policies Committee. He was selected by students, faculty, and staff in 1999 as the Outstanding Faculty Member and, in 1994, received the Richard S. Wallace Distinguished Service Award. In 1988, Dr. Garvey received the Alumni Association’s Town and Gown award for his work uniting the university with the community it serves. He is also a member of the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi. Active in civic organizations, Dr. Garvey also serves as writing coach for The Augusta Chronicle and as arts editor for Augusta Magazine. He is a past member of the Leadership Augusta executive board, the Summerville Neighborhood Association, the Classic Theatre Alliance, Fort Gordon Theatre, Augusta Players, Christian Art Series Productions, and Youth Leadership Augusta.
