Although she’s only been in her position for six months, Ms. Kim Hartenstein was recently named Physical Plant Employee of the Quarter. Mr. Dave Freeman, assistant director of the Physical Plant, says that in the short time Ms. Hartenstein has worked at the Physical Plant, her quality of work has proven exceptional.

“Kim is the first person you talk to when calling the Physical Plant, and she is always friendly and willing to help no matter what the task,” he says.

Ms. Hartenstein is a secretary at the front desk in the Physical Plant. The Keeper of the Keys, as she calls herself, is essentially the communication hub between the Physical Plant staff and the campus. She says she enjoys working there because everyone works well together.

“I was very surprised to receive the Physical Plant Employee of the Quarter Award because I have only been here for six months,” she says. “It was totally unexpected.”

Before joining the Physical Plant staff, she was a program support specialist in Continuing Education for nine years. “I just wanted a change in scenery,” says Ms. Hartenstein.

A native of Warren, Pa., Ms. Hartenstein moved to Columbia County 17 years ago when her husband, Fred, got a job as an equipment manager at the Augusta National. The mother of two sons, Craig and Scott, Ms. Hartenstein is the team manager for Scott’s soccer team, the Columbia County Patriots. She arranges the team’s tournaments and handles the budget. She also is a youth leader at West Town Community Church in Evans.

In her spare time, her favorite thing to do is read. “I love to read. Right now, I’m reading Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (book four),” she laughs. “My son has them all, and he’s reading book six, so I decided to try and catch up with book four.”
