Week of Welcome kicks off August 12

Week of WelcomeStudents will have a full schedule of events this month as Week of Welcome (WOW) kicks off on Friday, August 12, with Move-in Day from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at University Village off Wrightsboro Road. Faculty, staff, and students will be available to assist students with moving in to the university’s first campus housing. The University Village property encompasses 24 acres and offers fully-furnished apartments, a clubhouse, swimming pool, computer lab, walking trails, and picnic areas.

On Sunday, August 14, New Student Convocation will be held from 3-5 p.m. at Christenberry Fieldhouse. The program welcomes all new students to Augusta State, and it will be lead by Dr. Joyce Jones, vice president for student services and dean of students. Students will receive an official welcome from President William A. Bloodworth, Jr., Student Government Association Representative Jerry Bautista, and Miss ASU 2005, Lakeisha Thigpen. Breakout sessions will follow the program.

The Student Services Fair will be held on Monday, August 15, from noon-3 p.m. in Washington Hall. The fair is designed to connect students with campus offices and academic support programs. Participating in the fair will be the Office of Student Activities, the Career Center, financial aid, the Writing Center, Media Services, the library, Counseling Center, Dean of Students, public safety, Minority Advising Program, International Student Programs, and Information Technology Services.

Also on Monday, the WOW Committee and the Alcohol and Other Drugs Taskforce will sponsor a program on how to minimize stress in school from 7-8 p.m. at the University Village Clubhouse. The program, presented by Ms. Carole Middlebrooks, the Alcohol, Tobacco, and Other Drugs education coordinator and a certified addictions counselor at the University of Georgia, will focus on the many stressors in a student’s life, drugs and alcohol, and how they affect health, academics, and stress levels.

On Thursday, August 18, Ms. April Zahner, a prevention specialist with Rape Crisis and Sexual Assault Services of Augusta, will present a program about the latest date-rape drugs (including alcohol), the laws concerning statutory rape, and rape prevention at 7 p.m. at the University Village Clubhouse.

To cap off Week of Welcome, a collegiate fashion show will be held on Friday, August 26, beginning at 11 a.m. in Allgood Hall. Students, faculty, and staff will model the collegiate attire from the ASU Bookstore and the Crate.
