Ms. Kristin Casaletto, fine arts, was awarded a one-month artist residency fellowship at Blue Mountain Center in Blue Mountain Lake, N.Y., from June 17-July 15. Blue Mountain Center, founded by Adam Hochschild, assembles international groups of artists whose work is politically or socially activist in nature. Ms. Casaletto’s work there addressed themes of race and class in the South. She also presented a show of her artwork and gave an artist’s lecture during the residency. Ms. Susan Mucha, languages, literature, and communications, had a review of her first novel, Deadly Deception, published in the Charleston (S.C.) Mercury. She also appeared on a noon television show in Charleston. Ms. Mucha will travel to Lima, Peru, on August 26 for a speaking engagement at the American Canadian Club. Ms. Priscilla Hollingsworth, fine arts, was awarded an artist’s residency at the Watershed Center for the Ceramic Arts in Newcastle, Maine. Her work there is in preparation for an upcoming solo exhibition at Elon University in Elon, N.C., during March. Mr. Jasper Cooke, public safety, recently participated in the 2005 Annual Summer Training Conference sponsored by the Georgia Association of Chiefs of Police in Savannah. Dr. William Wellnitz, biology, was recently named director of the Georgia Science Olympiad. Dr. Wellnitz has been involved with the Georgia Science Olympiad since 1998 as the regional tournament director. A native of Gary, Ind., Dr. Wellnitz has been at ASU since 1980. He has published five children’s science books, and he was known as Wizard Wellnitz on two television shows, Xis and Kidnection. He is a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Society for Microbiology, and the Society of Sigma Xi. Dr. Wellnitz earned abachelor’s degree from Cornell University, a master’s degree from Colorado University, and a doctoral degree, also from Cornell University. Mr. Clint Bryant, athletics, has been named second vice president of the Black Coaches Association of Indianapolis. The purpose of the association is to foster the growth and development of ethic minorities at all levels of sports both nationally and internationally. Mr. Emmett Turner, senior ASU golfer, qualified for the U.S. Amateur Championship after finishing second in the qualifying tournament at Old Chatham Golf Course in Durham, NC. The tournament will be held August 22-28 at the Merion Golf Club in Ardmore, Pa.. For the past three years, Mr. Turner has served as an alternate for the championship tournament. A native of Greenwood, S.C., he was previously named to the Academic All District III team and was one of five national finalists for the prestigious Byron Nelson Award. The ASU Budget Office was recently reorganized. Ms. Kim Jones requested that she be moved from her position as budget director to a part-time employee status. She is now budget analyst, and Ms. Aisha Lavin has been named the new budget director.
............................................ News Briefs: Mr. Karl Munschy, the director of the ASU bookstore, has been named director of business services. In this position, Mr. Munschy will be responsible for procurement, central services, and auxiliary services, which includes the bookstore, food services, and vending. “Karl has been a real asset to ASU since he joined our team,” says Mr. N. Dan Whitfield, vice president for business operations. “He has excellent management and leadership skills, and he has made many improvements in operations as the bookstore director. I know he will do well in his new assignment.” Mr. Munschy, who has extensive experience in the management of university and private bookstores, came to ASU in 2003 from USC-Aiken where he was director of auxiliary services. He holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Davenport University in Michigan and a master’s degree in management from Southern Wesleyan University. ............................................

Tune in Sunday, August 7, to hear the latest edition of ASU Reports, a monthly pre-taped 30-minute radio program featuring ASU faculty sharing their expertise on a wide variety of topics. This month’s show will feature Dr. Paulette Harris, Cree-Walker Professor of Education, talking about the ASU Literacy Center and issues in education. The show airs at 6 a.m. on WAKB 96.9 FM, 7 a.m. on WFXA 103.1 FM (Foxie 103), and 5 p.m. on WTHB 100.9 FM). Next month’s program will feature Mr. Tony Kellman, professor of English, who will talk about creative writing and his latest CD, Limestone. An opening reception will be held on Thursday, September 1, for the Gary Wahl and Ann Hennon Barber photography and video show in the ASU Fine Arts Gallery.
