An article about Donna Wear’s research on the shoals spider lily appeared in the Winston-Salem Journal in July. Dr. Wear, biology, has been studying this species of flower for the past year.

Camilla B. Reid, Reese Library, was a summer fellow at the Institute for Academic Library Leadership at Vanderbilt University’s Peabody College of Education and Human Development in Nashville, Tenn. Her institute project related to the positive influence of library faculty and academic information literacy programming on student retention and success.

Donald Howard, business administration, recently became a member of the board of directors of Southeastern Bank Financial Corporation.

Paul Harris, political science, participated in a panel discussion on illegal immigrants in Georgia. The nationwide radio broadcast was aired on the Los Angeles/Santa Monica National Public Radio affiliate, KCRW program To the Point.

Louise Shivers, writer-in-residence, was featured in an article in the Lifestyles section of the North Augusta Star.

Jurgen Brauer, business administration, co-presented Trade and Conflict: A Sectoral Perspective at the 10th Annual Economics of Defense and Security Conference in Thessaloniki, Greece. In addition, he published the second issue of the new The Economics of Peace and Security Journal (www.epsjournal.org.uk), which he co-edits with a colleague in the United Kingdom. He also conducted a week-long scuba summer camp at the University of Georgia Center for Continuing Education for 10-14 year olds in Athens, Ga. (http://www.universityscuba.com/sauga2006.htm) Along with Neal Wagner, mathematics and computer science, Dr. Brauer presented Forecasting U.S. GDP with Dynamic Forecasting Genetic Programming at the same conference in Thessaloniki.

Paul Sladky, English and foreign languages, won the gold medal in the 100-meter butterfly and the 200-, 100-, and 50-meter freestyle at the Alabama Sports Festival in June.

Sankara Sethuraman, mathematics and computer science, co-wrote the article Improving Women’s Experience during Speculum Examinations at Routine Gynecological Visits: Randomized Clinical Trial, which was published in the British Medical Journal in June.

Joseph Greene, business administration, was recently appointed chair of the board of directors of the Healthcare Georgia Foundation.

Michael Searles, history, anthropology, and philosophy, discussed black cowboys in the West on ASU’s 30-minute radio program, ASU Reports-On Air.

Bill Nelson, Reese Library, presented the workshop, Practical Library Assessment: Applying the ACRL Standards for Libraries in Higher Education, in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. Dr. Nelson also attended a American Library Association conference in New Orleans where he was appointed to an additional two-year term as chair of the national Standards and Accreditation Committee of the Association of College and Research Libraries.

James Kirkland, building maintenance, was named Physical Plant’s Employee of the Quarter for the second quarter. Mr. Kirkland has been employed at ASU for 11 years. He lives in Appling with his wife Edith and children Forest, 9, and Hannah, 7. In his spare time, he enjoys hunting and fishing.

Chip Darracott, kinesiology and health science; Bill Dodd, academic affairs; Steve Lape, information technology services; Helen Hendee, development and alumni relations; Eddie Howard, student activities; Ralph Walker, political science; Paul Harris, political science; and Tamiko Ferrell, University Village; lent their expertise to members of the media during the month of July.
