Mary-Kathleen Blanchard

Mary-Kathleen Blanchard, languages, literature and communications, was recently recognized by her alma mater, Western Michigan University, with an Alumni Achievement Award. Dr. Blanchard graduated from WMU with a degree in French. She earned a master’s degree from Middlebury College and a doctoral degree from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. Dr. Blanchard joined the university in 1971. Interestingly, Dr. Blanchard’s father was a long-time administrator at the institution, where her sister also was an English instructor and her aunt taught in the music department. Her father and mother, two sisters, a brother, three aunts, three uncles, and numerous cousins also graduated from the university.

Jurgen Brauer, business administration, recently wrote a technical background paper on the supply and demand for small arms in developing countries for the Small Arms Survey, a project of the Graduate Institute of International Studies, Geneva, Switzerland. The project publishes a highly regarded annual Small Arms Survey (Oxford University Press). His background paper will be used to guide a multi-year research effort to understand demand for small arms and small-arms abuse in developing countries.

John Carr, fine arts, recently helped compose Brookwood Elementary’s CD I’m Gonna. The CD is a compilation of spirituals.

Bill Nelson, Reese Library, made two recent presentations titled Higher Education Standards for Libraries (2004): New ACRL Multi-type Standards and SACS Standards (2004): A Compliance Strategy for Academic Libraries at Georgia Library Association-Council of Media Organizations Conference in Jekyll Island. He also presented four workshops on library standards and an assessment titled Assessment in Libraries: Practical Approaches for Creating a Continuous Assessment Environment at the preconference to the North Carolina Library Association Conference in Winston- Salem. He also presented Assessment of Reese Library: Practical Application of the ACRL Standards for Libraries in Higher Education at Augusta State University and Advancing a Culture of Engagement: Practical Application of the ACRL Standards for Libraries in Higher Education at Georgia Southern University.

Charlotte Price, nursing, was recently chosen as a program visitor for the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC). The NLNAC is the accrediting body for the National League for Nursing. She also attended the Program Evaluation Training Forum in Miami.

Saundra Reinke, political science, and Randy Miller, political science, co-authored a paper titled It's Not What You Know, It's Who You Know: The Connection Between Ethical Leadership, Merit Pay and Performance Appraisal which was delivered at the 2003 Southeastern Conference for Public Administration’s annual meeting held in Savannah.

Paul Harris, political science, recently co-authored a paper titled, New Challenges to Devolution: Interstate Compacts and Their Effects on Water Resource Distribution, which was delivered at the 2003 Southeastern Conference for Public Administration. He also wrote a guest editorial on U.S.-German relations which was published in The Augusta Chronicle, The State: South Carolina's Newspaper, and The Stars & Stripes. He also delivered the keynote address on the Russian Jewish Diaspora in the U.S. and Germany at the Moses Mendelssohn Center for European Jewish Studies in Potsdam, Germany.

Sudha Ratan, political science, recently represented ASU’s MPA Program at the National Association of Schools of Public Affairs and Administration Annual Meeting held in Pittsburgh, PA.
