Alumni Association barbecue raises $4,200 for scholarships

Despite cloudy skies and a threat of rain, more than 500 alumni, faculty, staff and friends attended the ASU Alumni Association Barbecue on Friday, October 10. The ASU Alumni Association decided to revitalize the tradition this year after taking a break for a few years. The barbecue was also a culmination of the A Day campaign activities.

Barbecue Committee Chairman Natasha Pratt stated, “I have never had so much fun planning an event. The planning involved community leaders along with ASU faculty, staff and alumni. It is nice to have such an involved community devoted to Augusta State University.” Pratt also noted that the barbecue attendance was the highest in several years.

A highlight of the event was barbecue prepared by ASU alumnus James Britt who now lives in Birmingham, AL. Britt, a 1975 graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Biology, cooked the pork and chicken for the event and served it with his award-winning barbecue sauces. At his side working the event was his wife Cynthia, also an ASU alumna, and his family and friends. Entertainment was provided by the Carl Purdy Bluegrass Band.

The event, a fundraiser to benefit the Faculty/Alumni Scholarship, raised approximately $4,200. The Faculty/Alumni Scholarship Endowment was established in 1992. The endowment awards five merit-based, four-year scholarships each year.
