Charlotte Price and Jeanette Merriweather, nursing, recently participated in the 2004 Georgia Self Help for Hard of Hearing People (SHHH) Fall Conference in Augusta.

Paul Harris, political science, and Ralph Walker, Research Center, provided commentary for election coverage by local television stations. In addition, Dr. Walker was quoted in an article about the elections in the November 4 edition of The Augusta Chronicle.

Richard Harrison, College of Education, recently chaired the NCATE/PSC accreditation visit for Kennesaw State University. The accreditation visit was for all teacher education programs.

Susan Mucha, languages, literature, and communications, will have her first novel, Deadly Deception, published by Harbor House Books in April. The murder mystery begins in Augusta, while the majority of the story takes place in Peru.

Pamela Hayward and Marsha Loda, languages, literature, and communications, recently made presentations at the National Communication Association Conference in Chicago. Dr. Loda presented The Communicative Effects of Message Presentation and Sequencing on Marketing Campaign Planning. Both women were part of the panel Fine Tuning the Group Project. Dr. Hayward spoke on Students Reactions to the Real-World Applications of Group Assignments and Dr. Loda spoke on Simulating Business Competition with the Group Project. Dr. Hayward, secretary of the Georgia Communication Association, represented that group at the States Advisory Council meeting.

Eric Skipper, languages, literature, and communications, recently had an article, Death in the Hills: The Mountains as a Place of Refuge and Dying for Steinbeck’s Mexican Characters, published in the fall issue of The Steinbeck Review.

William Nelson, Reese Library, was invited to speak at the annual conference of the Illinois Library Association. The presentation, Higher Education Standards for Libraries (2004): Library Assessment and the New ACRL Multi-type Standards, was delivered in September. His article, SACS Standards 2004: A Compliance Strategy for Academic Libraries, was published in the fall issue of The Southeastern Librarian.

Dr. Nelson was also invited to present a two-day workshop on library assessment for the University System of Puerto Rico on November 22 and 23 in San Juan. He also conducted a workshop and made a presentation on library assessment at the biennial conference of the Southeastern Library Association in Charlotte, N.C., November 9-12. Dr. Nelson was also invited to conduct a workshop on library assessment in Chicago on November 17 for the Network of Illinois Learning Resources in Community Colleges.

Dr. Marya M. Free, professor emerita of English, was appointed to the Phi Kappa Phi’s director of fellowships. Prior to her appointment to national office, Dr. Free served for more than 25 years as chapter secretary and treasurer of the Augusta State chapter of Phi Kappa Phi, where she is also a charter member. As director of fellowships, Dr. Free will chair the national fellowship committee, which selects the recipients of the Phi Kappa Phi Graduate Fellowships.

Dr. Deborah Richardson, chair of the Department of Psychology, Dr. Juliette Richetin, post-doctoral associate, and alumni Kathi Bivens, Sara R. Daniel, Heather Ferguson, Matthew J. Gregowski, Many McGinty-Post, Christine McNally, Faith Pasko, and Peter Warren participated in the Annual Society of Southeastern Social Psychologists Conference held at Clemson University in Clemson, S.C. in November. This year’s conference was attended by many of the southeast’s social psychologists including ASU personnel and associates who contributed to the overall success of the program by presenting poster presentations about various research projects.

News Briefs

Maria Darley, Career Center, gave birth to William Jeffrey Darley on Wednesday, November 24. “Will” weighed 6 lbs., 6 oz. and was 20 inches long.
