More than 350 students will receive their degrees at graduation exercises on Saturday, December 11, at 10 a.m. The honor of speaking at the December Commencement ceremony is given to the faculty member who is selected by colleagues and students as the year’s Outstanding Faculty Member. This year, Janice Williams-Whiting, professor of art, will be the guest speaker. A celebrated member of the local arts community, Ms. Whiting’s work has also been featured in museums such as the Mint Museum in Charlotte, N.C., and the Boston Museum of Contemporary Arts. Active in local civic projects, she has also contributed her art to Union Baptist Church, St. Stephen’s Ministry, the Battered Children’s Workshop, and the American Cancer Society. Ms. Whiting obtained a bachelor’s degree from the University of Georgia and received a master’s degree in fine arts from Indiana State University. Two Army ROTC cadets will also receive their commission to the United States Army at the Department of Military Science’s Commissioning Ceremony at 2 p.m. on December 11, in the Washington Hall Towers. The Department of Nursing will also pin nine new nurses at their annual pinning ceremony. The program, which features graduates reciting the Nightingale Pledge, will be held at 7 p.m. on Friday, December 10.
