“It definitely surprised me,” says Mr. Hines. “I didn’t know I was going to get the award, and it means a lot.” The father of 10 children, five girls and five boys, Mr. Hines says he loves being outside more than anything, which is why he loves his job so much. On a daily basis, his responsibilities include litter control, waste management, and pressure washing. In fact, he often participates in other grounds assignments and often volunteers for overtime events. “When I get a little free time, I’ll go do something else on campus,” he says. “It keeps the day going.” Mr. Hines came to the university in 1993 to work in the building services division and was then transferred to the grounds division. A native of Burke County, Mr. Hines loves to fish and hunt. He fishes at least four days a week. When he hunts, he does so in Burke County, where his 105-year-old mother lives. In addition to working at ASU, Mr. Hines also owned a bar for nearly 10 years. The establishment, The Big Apple, was a popular place located off Steed Street. Maintaining both jobs became too difficult, he says, so he decided to focus on his position at the university. “I’m very blessed to have a job,” says Mr. Hines. His philosophy is simple. “It’s not about how much you make, it’s what you do with what you make.” Other News: Graduation | Cullum | NCATE | Social Work Degree | Construction Update | Campus Notables | Photographic Review 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | Faculty Spotlight | Staff Spotlight | Calendar | Birthdays | Quiz | Table of Contents
