“A lot happened for me that year,” the associate professor of accounting in the College of Business Administration recalls. It was the same year he took a teaching position here at Augusta State, moving his wife, Lori, and adopted son, Glen, from College Station, Texas, to the Garden City. He has no regrets in making the move because for Dr. Miller, a smaller university is a better fit for him. “I really like the students at ASU,” he says. “And I really like the faculty here. It’s different being at a smaller school; there’s interaction between the disciplines in the College of Business Administration. You get different personalities and viewpoints. I think that’s important.” But there was a time when teaching was tough for the San Antonio native. After earning his undergraduate degree from Texas State University, he was asked by the chair of the accounting department to stay at the university and teach while earning a master’s degree. Dr. Miller agreed. “During my first year of teaching, I really struggled,” he says. “I had no intention of teaching because I am really shy, but I was much more confident by my second year.” While teaching at Texas A&M University, his first position after receiving a doctoral degree, Dr. Miller was active in intramural sports. He says he first met his wife at a basketball game. “She came with a friend to our game, and that’s the first time I ever saw her,” he says. “She taught aerobics, and I decided to join her class—not because I was interested in aerobics, but interested in her. She tells people that she couldn’t watch me in her class because I was so bad at it.” Dr. Miller still keeps busy by exercising every day at the Family Y. What takes up most of his time is sports. “All of my children play sports,” he says. Dr. Miller is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the American Accounting Association, and the Georgia Society of Certified Public Accountants. He is also an advisor to the ASU chapter of Phi Beta Lambda (PBL), which he is very proud of because of the students’ accomplishment over the past few years. “Since 1997 our PBL students have consistently ranked among the top 10 chapters nationally,” Dr. Miller says. “Also, several of our students have placed first in the state competition. The students have worked very hard.” Dr. Miller earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Texas State University and a doctoral degree from Louisiana State University.
