Work is progressing on the ASU History Walk and Guard
House along Walton Way.
The History Walk, a $1.5 million project, includes rest areas and interpretative
historic displays that depict the history of ASU, the Augusta Arsenal, and
the Summerville and Sandhills districts.
Currently, the wall is nearing completion, while work on the walk should be
done by late March. Bids for Phase II of the walk along parts of Katherine
Street and Arsenal Avenue are going out soon.
Restoration of the Guard House, built in 1866 and located on the corner of
Walton Way and Katherine Street, is nearing 75 percent completion. The building
will be used as a museum and will anchor the beginning of the History Walk.
A replica of the Guard House's original porch has been rebuilt based on photographs
and remnants of the original foundation, while the brick exterior has been
stripped of paint and resealed. A dedication ceremony is planned for April
24.
