ASU students study in England

Augusta State University students will be among 150 students from University System of Georgia institutions who will study in England this summer. For the first time in several years, an ASU faculty member will accompany the group and teach in the England program.

Dr. Gwen Wood, associate professor of political science, will teach two courses in the five-week summer program. She described the program as one that is designed to encourage Georgia students to complete six semester hours in their core curriculum or major field subjects while experiencing London as a “field laboratory” for their studies. Classes meet two days per week, structured field trips take place two days each week, and Fridays remain free to encourage students to travel throughout England, Scotland, Wales, and Ireland as well as the European continent.

Wood has planned field trips for her classes to visit the Tower of London, the Houses of Parliament, the British Museum, and other sites in addition to the group excursions to Stonehenge, Salisbury, and Hampton Court.

The University of Surrey-Roehampton, in the suburbs of London, is the site for the study abroad program. Students will experience living in a residence hall for the five-week stay. Students will have their own rooms, and most meals are included in the study package. Also included is a one-month pass for unlimited travel on London’s Underground and bus transportation systems and eight days of unlimited train travel throughout Britain.

Students may select from 30 courses in management, psychology, humanities, history, political science, theater, literature, and communications. ASU students will register for these courses as they normally would for summer school. Instructors will be faculty members from other Georgia colleges and universities, including Valdosta State, Kennesaw State, Georgia Southern, Columbus State, and others.
