Cullum Lecture Series continues

South Asia

The Cullum Lecture Series focusing on South Asia will continue with speaker Dr. Harold Gould Tuesday, Feb. 10, at 11:30 a.m. and 7 p.m. in the Butler Lecture Hall.

As the speaker for Tuesday’s Cullum Lecture Series event, Dr. Gould will present Why Nuclear Proliferation in South Asia? Where It All Went Wrong at 11:30 a.m., and The Kashmir Tragedy: Why It Won’t Go Away at 7 p.m. Other speakers for the month of February include Dr. Gautam Kundu, Dr. Michael Bishku, and Dr. Mumtaz Ahmad.

Dr. Harold Gould is a native of Boston and is a visiting scholar in South Asian Studies at the Center for South Asian Studies at the University of Virginia, Charlottesville. He received his doctorate in philosophy and anthropology from Washington University in St. Louis. As part of his focus on South Asian studies, Dr. Gould has written seven books, 100 journal articles, and over 50 opinion and editorial pieces.

An associate professor of English at Georgia Southern University, Dr. Gautam Kundu obtained a terminal degree in modern American literature and film. His specialty is literature of the 1920s and F. Scott Fitzgerald. Dr. Kundu attended the School of Criticism and Theory at Dartmouth College and has published essays on Indian cinema.

Dr. Michael Bishku is an associate professor of history at Augusta State University. He received his PhD in 1981 from New York University in history and Middle East languages and literature. Dr. Bishku has received Fulbright grants to study in Morocco and Tunisia, Uzbekistan, Turkey, and Pakistan, and has received National Endowment for the Humanities grants to do research at Duke University and the University of Texas at Austin. He is currently the vice president-elect of the American Council for the Study of Islamic Societies.

Professor of Political Science at Hampton University Dr. Mumtaz Ahmad has been a senior research associate at MRM, Inc., a social science research and consulting firm focusing on contemporary South Asian and Middle Eastern developments. He also is an associate professor at the National Institute of Public Administration in Karachi, Pakistan. He received a PhD in political science from the University of Chicago and has published seven books and numerous papers and articles on politics of Islamic resurgence and Islamic developments in South Asia and the Middle East.
