History and Anthropology is renamed

ASU’s Department of History and Anthropology received a new name in Board of Regents Action January 6 at their monthly board meeting. The department will now be known as the Department of History, Anthropology, and Philosophy.

The move incorporates the philosophy program, with classes being taught by Dr. Steven Weiss, an assistant professor of philosophy. Dr. Weiss received a bachelor’s degree in philosophy from the University of Illinois and his master’s and doctoral degrees, both in philosophy, from the University of Wisconsin–Madison. While studying for his master’s degree, he studied at the Universitat–Bonn in the then-Federal Republic of Germany.

“The principal thrust of our philosophy program is in the field of history of philosophy,” said Dr. Samuel Sullivan, vice president for academic affairs. “Moving the philosophy program and changing the name of our Department of History and Anthropology to include philosophy reflects this view.”
