Film honoring Black History Month will kick off Film Series in February

In honor of Black History Month, the film, Pieces d’Identities, will be shown on Monday, Feb. 6. At first glance, the film is a timeless story of an old king, his daughter, a dragon of sorts, and a prince charming who rescues them. However, the filmmaker’s simple fable raises some of the most troubling issues of identity facing people of African descent in the late 20th century.

A coming-of-age story set in 1973, against the fall of the socialist Allende government and the installation of the military junta in Chile, Machuca effectively uses a school experience to provide a melancholy look at the failure of a democratic society free from class divisions. Richly human in focus, this Spanish language drama steadily cranks up its political and emotional charge, poignantly viewing its themes through the eyes of two 11-year-old boys. The film will be shown on Monday, Feb. 13.

The Danish drama, Brothers, explores the complications of individual and social ethics stemming from the repercussions of war on one man and his family. Winner of the Audience Award for World Cinema at the 2005 Sundance Film Festival, Brothers will be shown on Monday, Feb. 20.

Kings & Queens, a French film from Arnaud Desplechin, expertly mixes comedy, tragedy, and melodrama to tell the emotional story of the intersecting lives of two former lovers. It will be shown on Monday, Feb. 27.

Funded by student activity fees, all films are shown at 7 p.m. in 170 University Hall. The film series is a semester-long series of Monday night foreign or independent films. Stevan Clements, Cree-Walker Distinguished Professor of Communications, is the director of the series. Admission is free.

For a full schedule of films, contact the Office of Student Activities at 737-1609.
