Davies named chair

Kimberly A. Davies, associate professor of sociology, has been named chair of the Department of Sociology, Criminal Justice, and Social Work, after serving as acting chair since 2004.

“Dr. Davies has provided exemplary leadership as acting chair of the department, and I am pleased she has agreed to continue in this key administrative position,” says Samuel Sullivan, vice president for academic affairs. “Her commitment to student success and faculty development, as well as her own record of scholarship and service, demonstrate the values and mission of Augusta State.”

In 2001, Dr. Davies was named recipient of the university’s Outstanding Faculty Award. She was also recognized with an award from the Academy of Criminal Justices Sciences for a study, Economic Inequality Among Women and Female Perpetrated Homicide.

Dr. Davies has published several papers on the topics of homicide and violence toward women, and she has made a number of presentations at regional and national conferences of the American Sociological Association.

“Dr. Davies is an exceptional professional in her field. Besides the fine reputation she is building in her area of professional expertise, she has shown exceptional leadership on the campus. Indeed, her work as interim chair of the department last year particularly exhibited her capacity for leadership,” says Robert Parham, dean of the Katherine Reese Pamplin College of Arts and Sciences.

A proponent of student service learning projects, she involves sociology majors in community research and her most recent project involved a survey report on AIDS education and resources in the CSRA.

Dr. Davies is a member of the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences, Alliance for Women in Community Corrections, the American Society of Criminology, and the American Sociological Association. An Ohio native, she attended the Ohio State University, where she earned undergraduate degrees in sociology and women’s studies and master’s and doctoral degrees in sociology.
